My dear friends

Once again, the Brazilian Society of Genetics has the satisfaction of announcing their annual meeting. And again, we will meet in Águas de Lindóia, SP, at the Monte Real Resort Hotel, from August 30th to September 2nd, 2011.The theme this year will be “Manipulating DNA: 4 decades   opening new frontiers”, in commemoration of the publication of the seminal work of Kathleen Danna and Daniel Nathans "Specific cleavage of simian virus 40 DNA by restriction endonuclease of Hemophilus influenzae". PNAS U S A. 1971; 68: 2913. Herein, it was demonstrated for the first time that a genome (in this case the small simian vírus SV40) could be cleaved and mapped by a bacterial restriction enzyme. In a very short time, the full understanding of these enzymes in facilitating the manipulation of genetic material, was followed by a simply amazing advance in science and biotechnology, ultimately resulting in the Nobel Prize of 1978 for its discoverers, D. Nathans, W. Arber and H. Smith.

One of the key elements for scientific progress is the mutual exchange of information among researchers. This we intend to achieve in our 57th Congress, whereby the expectations of contributing to an improvement in the scientific quality of Genetics in this country.

Furthermore, as we have done since 1999, we will be promoting the event “Genetics Out-of-Doors”, an important activity for divulging and popularizing  Genetics, thereby contributing to the education and stimulation of youth in the Brazilian Society.

So long!

Carlos F. M. Menck

President of the SBG.
